How to Pick a Doggy Daycare in the Lehigh Valley

What Actually Matters When Choosing a Dog Daycare

Most dog owners in the Lehigh Valley start their search the same way: Google a few options, look at photos, check reviews, and go with whoever has the best-looking website. That is a reasonable approach, but it misses the things that actually matter for your dog's wellbeing.

Here is what to focus on when evaluating any doggy daycare in Easton, Bethlehem, Allentown, or anywhere in Northampton or Lehigh County.

Group Sizes Matter More Than You Think

The biggest difference between a home-based daycare like Hilltop and a large commercial facility is group size. Large facilities may have 30, 40, or even 50 dogs in a single play space. That is a lot of noise, a lot of stimulation, and a lot of risk.

Smaller group sizes mean more attention per dog, safer play dynamics, and a calmer, lower-stress environment. Ask any facility you visit: how many dogs are in a group at once? If the answer is over 10 or 15, think carefully about whether that is the right environment for your dog.

Ask Where Dogs Sleep Overnight

If you are considering boarding, this question alone tells you everything. Do dogs sleep in kennels or crates? Or do they sleep inside the home?

At Hilltop, dogs sleep inside our house. Not in a crate, not in a concrete kennel run. They are on dog beds, near us, in a real home environment. That is rare, and it makes a massive difference in how dogs settle and how they feel the next morning.

Visit Before You Book

Any reputable daycare should welcome you to visit before committing. Tour the yard. See the indoor space. Meet the person who will actually be caring for your dog.

If a facility does not allow pre-booking visits, that is a red flag.

At Hilltop, we offer free 15-minute tours for every new client. You bring your dog, let them explore, and ask us anything you want. No obligation. That is the right way to start.

Check for Vaccine Requirements

A facility that does not require up-to-date vaccines is not protecting your dog or anyone else's. At minimum, look for requirements for Rabies, DHPP (Distemper), and Bordetella (kennel cough).

If a facility takes any dog without verification, keep looking.

Questions to Ask Any Daycare

  • How many dogs are in each play group?
  • Who supervises the dogs and what is the staff-to-dog ratio?
  • Where do dogs sleep during overnight stays?
  • What is the pickup and drop-off window?
  • What happens if my dog gets sick or injured?
  • Can I visit before booking?

The Bottom Line

Finding the right daycare is worth taking the time to do properly. Your dog will spend hours there, possibly multiple days a week. The difference between the right environment and the wrong one shows up in your dog's behavior, energy level, and overall happiness.
